Mujeres Celebrates 40th Anniversary in Style at Voces Unidas Gala
Chicago, IL- Mujeres Latinas en Acción supporters, founders, and staff came together on Friday, March 22, 2013 to commemorate the achievements of the organization as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. Mujeres, the longest standing Latina organization in the country, has been holding the Gala since the 1990’s to raise awareness about Mujeres and its programs. The Voces Unidas Gala featured a silent auction, dinner, program, and live music and was attended by more than 450 guests and prominent politicians including Attorney General Lisa Madigan.
The BomPleneras set the tone for the evening with an energizing Puerto Rican drum and dance routine. Nina Chantele, a Chicago radio and TV personality and dinner MC, took the stage and introduced the President and CEO of Mujeres, Maria Pesqueira. Pesqueira reflected on Mujeres’ beginnings and thanked everybody who had been involved in the organization, from the initial founders to clients to supporters.
Pesqueira proclaimed, “Tonight we celebrate each other. We celebrate the community and fellowship that Mujeres has built, de mujer a mujer, woman to woman. A movement that has empowered Latinas and their families for the last forty years.”
Representatives from the Presenting Sponsors Allstate and Verizon Wireless, as well as Platinum Sponsor State Farm, came to the podium with messages of support.
Luz Vega-Marquis, President and CEO of the Marguerite Casey Foundation, received this year’s Voces Unidas Award for exceptional leadership. Maria Pesqueira presented the award, stating, “Luz has positioned the foundation as a leader in movement building by shaping its grant making strategies to support a nationwide movement of low-income families.”
Angel Melendez and the 911 Mambo Orchestra concluded the programming with captivating mambo music that brought dinner guests to the dance floor. At the end of the night, guests left satisfied and ready to support Mujeres for decades to come.
