Reauthorize VAWA Now!

Mujeres celebrates the Senate's decision to pass the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). This bill, sponsored by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Mark Kirk (R-IL), passed with bipartisan support last week. VAWA is crucial because it protects victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. Through VAWA, immigrant victims of domestic violence can obtain legal status on their own when their U.S. citizen and lawful permanent resident spouses, as part of the abuse, refused to petition for them.

Regularizing their status through VAWA has helped many of immigrants regain their confidence, overcome their situation, and go on to lead successful lives. Without VAWA, many of these victims would continue to live in fear of their perpetrators, lacking protections, and suffering in silence.

VAWA's survival is now in the hands of the U.S. House of Representatives. Mujeres’ most recent Latina Portrait: The Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act and Latinas stresses why VAWA is necessary to protect immigrant victims of violence and the positive change it can make in their lives. Keep informed and contact your Representative to show your support for the VAWA reauthorization!
