Staff Spotlight: Monica
After receiving her BSW from St. Augustine College, Monica signed up for the 40-hour domestic violence training at Mujeres Latinas en Accion. It was through the training she realized that she could really have a lasting effect in the community. She first started working part-time for Mujeres in 2009 for the Parent Support Program, but after realizing that her true passion was business and sales, she moved full-time to the Empresarias del Futuro Program in 2014 when the opportunity presented itself.
Empresarias del Futuro provides 15 weeks of leadership development, financial literacy and entrepreneurship training specifically for Latinas who are interested in starting or expanding their small business. Working alongside program director Claudia Alcantara, Monica provides assistance, training, and coaching for entrepreneurs throughout the city and suburbs. Monica frequently attends professional trainings to sharpen her own skills, staying current with topics related to entrepreneurship and finance, so that she can fully provide her clients with the necessary tools they need for their businesses.
Monica’s positive attitude and encouragement has helped to empower the women in the program and provide the motivation they need to continue pursuing their dreams, no matter how big. She says, “It makes me feel like I make a difference by empowering and helping them achieve their goals.” Her energy is infectious and she is constantly encouraging her clients to have that same positive attitude. After all, if you can dream it, you can do it!
