A Call for a Responsible and Complete State Budget

by Maria S. Pesqueira, President and CEO, Mujeres Latinas en Accion

The Governor’s rejection of the budget proposed by the Illinois General Assembly is irresponsible and dangerous. Without a complete budget on July 1, one without drastic cuts to vital human services, the state’s most vulnerable citizens, including survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, immigrants, and children, will be imperiled.

Our elected officials are asking Illinois residents to make steep sacrifices while they play political games. Over 8,000 Latina women and their families come to Mujeres Latinas en Acción each year. Mujeres staff works with these women in crisis to provide support and resources needed to leave dangerous situations and build a better life for themselves and their children. From crisis counseling and emergency financial assistance to youth violence prevention and court advocacy, we are committed to providing culturally relevant services that empower women to live lives free of violence and become leaders in their communities. Without these services, the immediate needs of Latinos throughout Chicagoland would go unmet.

Without a complete and responsible budget, Mujeres Latinas en Acción and other social service agencies throughout Illinois will be forced to drastically reduce services or close their doors. If our elected officials do not find a responsible and moral solution to the budget crisis, Mujeres will be forced to reduce staff from 47 to 8 people and our hours from six days a week to four, resulting in a devastating reduction in services available for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Without this crucial support, these women will be unable to break the cycle of violence for themselves and their families. Without our services our clients may be forced into dangerous situations – this could mean the difference between life and death.

Call your legislators and the Governor's office (217-782-0244) today and let them know that people and needs do not disappear when there is no funding and urge them to choose revenue and pass a responsible budget now. Join us on July 1!
