Domestic Violence Counselor

BASIC FUNCTION: Provides trauma-informed, client-centered, and culturally-responsive services to survivors of domestic violence (DV). Responsibilities include conducting intakes, assessments, treatment, and safety planning; offering individual and group counseling, psychoeducation, crisis intervention, and advocacy; and coordinating care with internal and external resources. The role also involves maintaining accurate documentation, participating in clinical reviews and reporting processes, engaging in outreach, advocacy, and community education efforts, and attending professional development trainings. Additionally, the counselor supports institutional advocacy for Latine survivors and may work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet client needs.

REPORTS TO: DV Counseling Supervisor

LOCATION: Hybrid (3 days in office – Pilsen*)
*May be required travel to other sites, as needed

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Engage and provide counseling services to survivors of domestic violence (across the lifespan) through individual and group services, as appropriate.
  2. Perform intakes and provide information, referrals, and linkages to survivors of domestic violence through walk-in, telephone, and scheduled intake services.
  3. Conduct assessments, treatment plans, and safety plans, using a participant-centered, trauma-informed, strength-based, and culturally responsive approach.
  4. Coordinate care with internal and external linkages and referrals to address survivors’ additional needs.
  5. Provide psychoeducation, intensive case management, crisis intervention, community referrals, and advocacy services to survivors.
  6. Participates in clinical reviews of cases as well as internal/external meetings.
  7. Complete accurate documentation of services rendered to survivors of domestic violence and maintain compliance with documentation standards as indicated by program, grant and organizational requirements. Participates in ongoing file reviews.
  8. Participates in reporting process, assists with statistic data gathering, and evaluation program needs, as appropriate.
  9. Advocates at the institutional level on behalf of Latines through participation in advisory groups and other coalitions that focus on the issue of domestic violence.
  10. Supports efforts to promote awareness of domestic violence, including participation in Domestic Violence Awareness Month and other community events.
  11. Participate in staff training sessions, in-services, staff meetings, clinical supervision, and professional group seminars or conferences to increase professional knowledge and enhance job skills.
  12. Assist with special projects assigned by the DV Counselor Supervisor and/or DV Director. 
  13. Participate in the delivery 42 hour DV training, community education, outreach and continuing education. Assist with the National Domestic Violence Hotline, as needed.
  14. Advocates at the institutional level on behalf of Latines through participation in advisory groups and other coalitions that focus on the issue of domestic violence.
  15. Provides prompt updates of external meetings to direct supervisor and ensures appropriate updates are provided to DV team during team meetings.
  16. Will be required to work evening and/or Saturday hours to meet participants’ scheduling needs.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required in social services or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Bilingual, bicultural (Spanish/English) required.
  • 40-Hour ICADV domestic violence trained preferred
  • Strong communication skills
  • Demonstrate skills and abilities to advocate for and with survivors of diverse populations.
  • Ability to multi-task in an environment where priorities can change rapidly
  • Prioritize projects, manage time to meet deadlines
  • Strong communication, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of gender-based violence and providing culturally relevant services preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

SALARY

$49,000-$57,500; FLSA Non-Exempt
