Helena Sugano, VP of Wellness Helena was born in Brazil and started working at Mujeres Latinas en Accion as the Domestic Violence Court Advocate in 1991. She graduated from Adler University with a Master of Arts in Counseling and is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. Helena has 40-hour Domestic Violence training, 40-hour Sexual Assault training, 60-hour ICASA counselor training, 20-hour partners abuse intervention training. Helena has had various roles at Mujeres, such as Domestic Violence and Sexual Coordinator, Parent Support Coordinator and Vice President of Wellness and Evaluation.
She is currently the Vice President of Wellness. She was also the co-presenter at the American Anthropological Association – Research on Mujeres Services; Safe Havens: Supervised Visitation and cultural appropriate services; Cultural issues in a supervised visitation setting Conference on Family Violence.
Helena feels privileged and inspired by the participants because despite of all their obstacles, they find their voices and make a difference in their lives and at the community at large. As an immigrant, Helena feels fortunate to be part of the Mujeres team that does not just provide cultural appropriate services, but advocates daily for issues that affect our community.
She is passionate about being part of the community that at times has been forgotten. However, from time and time again, the community has demonstrated to have resilience and the capacity to inspire others for more equality and social justice.
Helena enjoys cooking, spending time with her family and friends. She looks forward to travel to differences places and learn from others. Helena speaks Portuguese, Spanish and English
