About

the Community Engagement & Mobilization program

The Community Engagement & Mobilization Program mobilizes community members to become civically engaged on issues of:

  • Economic justice
  • Immigrant justice
  • Gender-based violence and
  • Women’s health

Building upon Mujeres’ legacy of grassroots organizing, community members can participate via the New Americans Initiative, Community-Health-Worker Model, or Latina Leadership. Under Community Engagement & Mobilization, lideres and promotoras de salud have championed significant advocacy and policy wins for immigrant survivors of gender-based violence.

Community Education

Community Education offers both virtual and in-person community workshops and presentations that are designed to increase community members’ access and knowledge of available, low-barrier resources. One of the popular series, Cafe-en-Accion, features different partnering organizations an opportunity to share and explain their resources, including healthcare and legal services, for Latina and immigrant community members. Additionally, Community Engagement offers community education through reproductive justice presentations that provide education and advocacy for reproductive and contraceptive health services, geared towards Latina and immigrant communities.

Offered both virtually and in-person at all of our offices and off-site.

Open to the community at large, including community members, professionals, groups and other social service organizations.

The services are continuously offered throughout the year.

Community Health Worker Development

Promotora de Salud model connects community members to life-saving, holistic health resources in a culturally relevant and affirming manner, which connect Latina/e community members to internal and external health resources. These may include resources for survivors of gender-based violence, as well as housing, naturalization services, and reproductive health referrals. Mujeres’ promotoras also participate in grassroots organizing and advocacy, often attending Springfield to advocate for comprehensive policy that benefits Latinas and their families.

Pilsen Headquarters (2124 W. 21st Place) and North Riverside office (7222 W. Cermak Road. 509 North Riverside, IL 60546)

Community members who are interested must complete community health worker training. Latina Leadership graduates may apply to become promotoras after completing Latina Leadership program.

The services are continuously offered throughout the year.

Latina
Leadership

Latina Leadership offers community members the skills of self-empowerment and tools for civic engagement to enact meaningful change in their communities. Community members join a co-hort of Spanish-speaking women who desire to build their skills of leadership, advocacy, and civic engagement, and these classes culminate in a final project that a) demonstrates each participants’ newfound knowledge and skills and b) benefits their community in some capacity. Latina Leadership also offers opportunities to apply to advocacy skills, including advocacy in Springfield, Illinois and the opportunity to speak and support policy that benefits Latinas and their families.
Pilsen Headquarters (2124 W. 21st Place)
