Domestic Violence (DV) Counselor

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage and provide counseling services to survivors of domestic violence (across the lifespan) through individual and group services, as appropriate.
  • Perform intakes and provide information, referrals, and linkages to survivors of domestic violence through walk-in, telephone, and scheduled intake services.
  • Conduct assessments, treatment plans, and safety plans, using a participant centered, trauma-informed, strength-based, and culturally responsive approach.
  • Coordinate care with internal and external linkages and referrals to address survivors’ additional needs.
  • Provide psychoeducation, intensive case management, crisis intervention, community referrals, and advocacy services to survivors.
  • Participates in clinical reviews of cases as well as internal/external meetings.
  • Complete accurate documentation of services rendered to survivors of domestic violence and maintain compliance with documentation standards as indicated by program, grant and organizational requirements. Participates in ongoing file reviews.
  • Participates in reporting process, assists with statistic data gathering, and evaluation program needs, as appropriate.
  • Advocates at the institutional level on behalf of Latines through participation in advisory groups and other coalitions that focus on the issue of domestic violence.
  • Supports efforts to promote awareness of domestic violence, including participation in Domestic Violence Awareness Month and other community events.
  • Participate in staff training sessions, in-services, staff meetings, clinical supervision, and professional group seminars or conferences to increase professional knowledge and enhance job skills.
  • Assist with special projects assigned by the DV Counselor Supervisor and/or DV Director.
  • Participate in the delivery 42-hour DV training, community education, outreach and continuing education. Assist with the National Domestic Violence Hotline, as needed.
  • Advocates at the institutional level on behalf of Latines through participation in advisory groups and other coalitions that focus on the issue of domestic violence.
  • Provides prompt updates of external meetings to direct supervisor and ensures appropriate updates are provided to DV team during team meetings.
  • Will be required to work evening and/or Saturday hours to meet participants’ scheduling needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bilingual, bicultural (Spanish/English) required.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and written communication
  •  Demonstrate skills and abilities to advocate for and with survivors of diverse populations.
  • Ability to multi-task in an environment where priorities can change rapidly.
  • Prioritize projects, manage time to meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of Gender-Based violence and providing culturally relevant services preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in social services or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Illinois Certified Domestic Violence 40-Hour Training preferred

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

  • This position has a hybrid work schedule which includes weekly in office presence.
  • Standard office environment.
  • Travel to other Mujeres office locations.
  • Work evenings and weekends as needed.

Standard office hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. This position requires occasional evening and weekend hours based on programmatic needs, events, and participant scheduling.
